Round 2

Well, the amaryllis has started a 2nd round!  The last flower was done about 5 days ago, so I trimmed off the stalks to allow the energy to go to the new growth.

Overall I think they are a pretty good investment, I've had flowers now since the beginning of January and I'm getting ready for a second go around in February!

I also started a pot of bulbs that I am forcing indoors.
I'm not sure I did it right, I learned after I potted them that there were things I didn't know.
I was told by a sales person at the garden center that they should have been put in a fake dormancy state for 12 weeks or they won't flower for me.  Then I read that after potting them to put them in a dark place like a closet for 8 weeks, keeping them moist and then bring them out.
My logic was, that since I ordered them in December, and the bulb suppier had them on hand from the fall bulb sales season, that the bulbs were already dormant.
Well I had already potted them, so I covered them with a dark cloth (because I don't have room in a closet to set the pot).  I tried to create the darkness through that method.  The bulbs started growing and were pushing the fabric in the air, so I decided I'd take it off and let nature take it's course.
I'm optimistic that they will flower.... keep your fingers crossed for me!

Winter Frosting

I was staring at the snow on all the trees and shrubs and thinking about how it looks like frosting!  So I got out there and snapped some quick shots and put them together in a mini movie (using my iMovie feature on my iMac)  Turn on your volume too...

A pot load of bulbs!

In an attempt to keep my passion for gardening alive during the winter I got a little crazy and I placed an order in December for Tulips, Daffodils, Hyacinths and Crocus to plant for an indoor garden.
Thanks to the folks at Van Bourgondien the bulbs were shipped quickly and were all in top condition!
Here are pictures of the bulbs I ordered and hope to see before long growing like crazy!
First up are these tulips called Barcelona
Second up are these yellow Daffodils called Carlton
 Third-  some Dafffodils called Minnow
Fourth- a two toned tulip called Tom Pouce
 Fifth- Hyacinths called Pink Frosting
Sixth- Bi-color Blue Grape Hyacinth or Muscari
Seventh are these classic Crocus called  Pickwick
Eighth and last are these Hyacinths called Stuyvesant
This is the monster pot I put all of them in! It's 22" across and and 8" deep. It's by Pottery Barn from their Ashby Collection (It's actually considered a bowl)
(I got it on a steep mark down- yay!)
I put some lightweight filler in the bottom and then filled it with dirt
to about 1/3rd full
I set the larger bulbs in first and then covered them with more dirt.
Then I put some of the tiny bulbs in place (because those shouldn't be planted as deeply) and covered with more dirt.
I moved the pot to this heavy glass end table.

I've never done this before so it will be a fun experiment.

Today is Jan.7, 2011 first day they were planted! Let's see how long they take to show their little faces!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you will follow along and see how this goes!

 Isn't nature fun...
These Paperwhites just kept growing taller and this morning they had joined together as though they were bonding...
Together they form a nice bouquet....
 Update on the Amaryllis...
It finally bloomed and the other two have caught up to each other, so I believe these two will be blooming together.....2 out of 3 isn't bad I guess..but darn it I wanted them all blooming at the same time!
(No my curtains aren't crooked it's me I can't take straight pictures :)
